St. George Castle Ticket + Audio Guide
Tour Details
At the designated time, we’ll meet at Tv. de São Bartolomeu 4, right in the heart of Lisbon, to begin our journey through centuries of history, humor, and breathtaking views.
We’ll kick off our adventure at the iconic St. George’s Castle, where our expert guide will share how this ancient fortress has watched over the city for nearly a thousand years. From its historic ramparts, we’ll take in some of the most scenic panoramic views of Lisbon stretching down to the Tagus River.
Leaving the castle, we'll pause at the famous Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol viewpoints before winding down through the Moorish maze of Alfama. Here, we'll trace the roots of Fado music, explore the daily lives of the Arab, Jewish, and Christian communities of the Middle Ages, and learn about the turbulent 14th-century love story between King Pedro I and Inês de Castro.
Along the route, we’ll admire the thick fortress-like walls of Lisbon Cathedral, pass the Church of St. Anthony, and discover sinister historical spots like the Cadeia do Aljube and the Pátio do Carrasco. We'll also admire the facade of the Church of Our Lady of the Conception Old, whose intricate stone carvings conceal mysterious alchemical symbols.
Next, it’s time to taste Ginjinha, Portugal's famous sour cherry liqueur, served from a traditional family-run spot while we learn about its place in local culture.
We’ll then stroll into grand Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio) to uncover secret symbols and hidden stories left out of standard guidebooks, before heading up into Chiado—Lisbon’s vibrant bohemian quarter, filled with tales of historic poets and intellectuals.
Finally, after a total of 2 hours, we'll bring the tour to an end.
